Description
The Eagle and Whale Pole was carved in the winter of 2006/2007 from the top of an old-growth red cedar log estimated to be 600 years old. Eagle, with Human on the shoulder of each wing, is perched on the head of Killerwhale, who bears Human on the shoulder joint as well as Owl on the bottom of his tail flukes.

EAGLE is seen as a symbol of power and prestige. and has a strong connection to peace. Eagle down, considered sacred, was used in ceremonies to welcome in friendship an important visitor. Eagle feathers are used for smudging and praying and eagle bones are used as whistles.

WHALE is the sea manifestation of the Wolf. Like Wolf, Whale mates for life and stays with its family travelling in large pods. The Whale is held in great awe for is power and size. It was believed that a Whale could capture a canoe and take it underwater to transform the occupants into other Whales.

These two figures, along with Human and Bear, are part of the Salmon Cycle which was central to the spiritual life of the Coast Salish peoples.
